A Selection of Ketchups

The use of Tomatoes within Ketchup was recorded in 1812 by James Mease. It was to impart more sweetness within Ketchup which used to be made with Mushrooms and Anchovies. In 1817 the early Tomato Catsup recipe was published then in 1824, Mary Randolph published another one. She was the cousin of Thomas Jefferson.

Using Tomatoes for making Ketchup spread almost like wildfire from then on. Tomatoes coming from a plant from South West and Central America was getting popular in the new United States.

Anchovies were out of fashion by the 1850's for Ketchup. Farmers were selling their Tomato Ketchup. The farmer Jonas Yekes is known as the first one to sell Tomato Ketchup in bottles. To catch up with history in 1876 was the birth of Heinz Tomato Ketchup and we all know how it went from there: succesful.

Confession for confession, I can't think of a time when in my home we run out of Heinz Ketchup... It is ever so useful. However it is not the only Ketchup in the house. The last Ketchup we tried was absolutly delicious, a little smoky and very nice.
