Summer Fruits Salad.

One thing has do be said for hot days is that when we do crave for heavier food in cold days, it is the polar opposite in hot days. We do seek much lighter food. There are simple biologic reasons for it, one of them is that our body needs more fat in Winter to fight the cold, it is an evolutianary process or mechanism. Hence in the hot days we require less heavy food to cope. The heavier you are in Summer the less you feel well. I can mention sweat, perspiration, the loss of hydration when we need more of Water within our bodies.

Keeping cool in the Summer is essential.

Why do we have in the hot days Parasol on outside table? Yes we can eat outside because the weather permits it, however the Sun can be beneficial as much as nefarious as the cold, when we have too much of it. The heatwave across Europe in 2003 left an estimated 72000 deaths. So we must keep hydrated at all time. But in those time Water becomes a scarcity with in some areas having emergency plans in order to cope with the harsh reality where too much Sun is not that good for you. Yes it can give a boost of Vitamin D but it can also burn your skin or gives you sun strokes.

Most Summer tables have a Parasol. It is a necessity.

I lost a very dear Friend, Barry Covington, who having done a cyclist race in South of France during a heatwave there in Albi, dropped on the ground just before the finishing line, he entered into a Coma and died about a week later. It was ever so sad. He was young and healthy. I dare say the sportiest of us all but yes, exherstion and Sun did get the better of him. RIP Barry you are sadly missed.

Barry Covington last race in Albi France August 2017. Probably one of the last photo of him. It was partly dehydration which took him away from us all. I still think that the organisators of the race should not have done it and would not have pursued with that cyclist race under a heatwave, it should have been postponed.

This last point is to highlight that dehydration is not just a faint affair. It can lead to death. Now if a ban on watering the garden is inavitable, salvaging some food of your produce can possibly done, Gem Lettuce can become Baby Gem Lettuce instead. The same goes for Potatoes, where they become Baby Potatoes. Baby Mary Potatoes is a succesful exemple if I may advance which are available by multiple growers in Supermarkets nowadays.

Gem Lettuce fully grown . If you want them slightly crispier it is better to harvest them earlier. However they are delicious both ways.

Using Vegetables and Fruits in Summer especially in a Salad is a good way to get nutrients and your five a day, like Doctors says. I will not say there that 'eat an apple a day keeps the Doctor at bay' but there is somehow in this old proverb an encouragement to eat more fruits.

Apples do make a very nice Ingredient to many salads from Fruity to savoury ones.

One Fruit which is mainly considered as a Vegetable is the Tomato. In my point of view, a Tomato can symbolise Summertime in a nutshell. Let us just say that I do love Salads with Tomatoes like the Caprese Salad to pick an exemple: Simple yet full of flavours.

Caprese Salad.

Salads are usually simple yet ever so refreshing. It has to be mentionned that Summer ones are not only tasty and full of fresh Ingredients but generally they are full of colours. Just to name a couple of Salads: the Greek Salad and la Salad Nicoise.
